In Barcelona and Real Madrid, LaLiga is home to arguably the two biggest clubs in the world and eyes are drawn to the Spanish top-flight whenever they play. For most footballers, representing either Spanish giant is viewed as the pinnacle and even wealthy English Premier League clubs fail to hold onto their biggest stars when Barcelona or Madrid come knocking.

Cristiano Ronaldo was famously desperate to leave Manchester United for Madrid while Luis Suárez pushed for a move away from Liverpool due to the allure of Barca. Under the tutelage of Diego Simeone, Atlético Madrid have impressively challenged the two powerhouses of Spanish football. But even the third force in Spain struggle to keep their best players as evidenced by Julián Alvarez’s desire to join Barca this summer. With the transfer window now open, we’ve analysed the record signings by Spanish clubs. You can view the full top 100 list of most expensive signings in the link below – which will update throughout the summer – and we’ve closer analysed the top 20.

Ousmane Dembele’s €148 million move from Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona in 2017 remains the record deal for a LaLiga club. After selling Neymar to PSG for a world record €222m fee, Barca reinvested that money in Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, who ranks as the second most expensive LaLiga signing. Both deals, however, proved fairly disastrous with Dembele struggling before moving to PSG and becoming a Ballon d’Or winner, while Coutinho failed to replicate his Liverpool form. As the graphic below illustrates, four of the top five record signings were all unsuccessful with the jury still out on Jude Bellingham – Madrid’s record transfer.

Atletico paid well over the odds to acquire João Félix from Benfica with the Portuguese youngster failing to reach his potential, while Eden Hazard cost more than €1m per appearance for Real. The best signing in the top 20 list is unquestionably Madrid’s €94m acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 as the attacker eventually become the most decorated club in the world’s all-time record goalscorer.
