Arsenal have reached an agreement with Club Brugge to sign Christos Tzolis. The English Premier League champions will pay an initial €40 million fee plus bonuses for the 24-year-old, as first reported by Belgian outlet HLN. The priority for Mikel Arteta in the transfer window is to bolster his attacking options and Tzolis can be viewed as a direct replacement for Leandro Trossard, who joined Besiktas this week for €20m.

It’s understood that the imminent acquisition of Tzolis won’t impact their pursuit of Morgan Rogers, while Arsenal also hold a genuine interest in Julián Alvarez. Tzolis spent three seasons at Norwich City, including 14 Premier League appearances, but he never really excelled at the Canaries. After spells at FC Twente and Fortuna Dusseldorf, Tzolis truly delivered on his potential at Club Brugge with his departure netting the Belgian side as club record fee, eclipsing the €37.5m AC Milan paid for Charles De Ketelaere.

Why Arsenal want Christos Tzolis

As previously mentioned, Arsenal want to strengthen their options in attack and Tzolis represents an intriguing market opportunity at a very affordable price. It’s a major step up from the Jupiler Pro League to the Premier League but Tzolis is incredibly talented and his attacking output at Brugge last season was simply phenomenal. As the graphic below illustrates, Tzolis registered an incredible 50 goal contributions in 50 games for Brugge.

The versatile attacker netted 21 goals and 29 assists as Brugge won the Belgian top-flight. Only Bayern Munich duo Harry Kane and Michael Olise provided more contributions for clubs in the top ten leagues across all competitions – Tzolis’ numbers were superior to Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. While Tzolis is naturally a left-winger, the Greek international can also play off the right and as an attacking midfielder, which makes him a fascinating signing for Arsenal.
