Cristian Romero is on the verge of completing his exit from Tottenham to join Atlético Madrid. There’s been constant speculation around the Spurs’ captain’s future this summer after it became clear that Roberto De Zerbi would sanction his departure. Romero splits opinion amongst the Tottenham support due to his woeful disciplinary record and he’s poised to depart for Atleti.

It’s understood that the two clubs have agreed a €40m package for the Argentinian international and the deal is expected to be confirmed in the coming days. Inter Milan led the race for the 28-year-old and Napoli also expressed an interest but Atleti won the race. Romero famously captained Tottenham to glory in the Europa League in 2025 and he departs with 156 appearances for Spurs.

Tottenham’s record departures

Romero’s impending exit is a significant departure for Tottenham and it ranks as their joint-fifth record sale in their history. The €40m package is €10m below his market value on Transfermarkt but there was a willingness from all parties to agree a deal. As referenced, the €40m fee will be Tottenham’s joint-fifth record sale, level with Brennan Johnson’s move to Crystal Palace in January.

Tottenham
Record sales

Tottenham’s record sale is Gareth Bale’s €101m exit for Real Madrid in 2013 with Harry Kane’s €95m move to Bayern Munich ranking second. Interestingly, Luka Vuskovic’s €54m sale to Brighton this summer ranks third and Spurs have refreshed their centre-back options with Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi arriving.
