113 goals in 31 games – Can Bayern Munich break near 80-year goalscoring record?

Bayern Munich are on course for a famous season with Vincent Kompany’s men looking unstoppable across all competitions. The Bavarian giants have enjoyed a near monopoly in the Bundesliga in recent history and they were crowned champions in April, taking their total to 13 of the last 14 German top-flight titles – Bayer Leverkusen’s title win in 2024 was a complete anomaly. Realistically, Bayern should win the Bundesliga every season given the financial disparity between them and every other club in Germany. Bayern are also expected to clinch a domestic treble as they are in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal Cup and they’ve already lifted the Super Cup.
Kompany’s side also progressed into the semi-finals of the Champions League by dispatching Real Madrid and they will face reigning champions PSG in the last four. Winning the Champions League would be a true representation of how brilliant this current Bayern side are. While many don’t view Bayern winning the Bundesliga as a truly impressive achievement, the manner in which they’ve dominated domestically and style of football has been outstanding. And they could feasibly break an incredible long-standing goalscoring record this season.
Most goals in a top five league season
Remarkably, Bayern have scored 113 goals across 31 games in the Bundesliga this season. To contextualise it, they’ve scored 52 goals more than second-ranked Borussia Dortmund. With three league games remaining, Bayern could feasibly break the all-time record for most goals in a top five league season across history. As the graphic below illustrates, Torino hold the record from the 1947/48 campaign when they netted 125 goals in 40 games when they won Serie A. Bayern would need to score 13 goals in their remaining three games to eclipse that record, but that doesn’t look out of reach considering they put four past Mainz on Saturday.

Every other club in the top 20 list played 38 games in their prolific seasons and the impressive element of Bayern’s potential achievement is that they will only play 34 games. If it was based on goals per game in a top five league campaign then Bayern will unquestionably smash that record. Bayern have scored 3.6 goals per Bundesliga this campaign. However, it is expected they will rest players after wrapping up the title, with the Champions League now becoming their priority. Real Madrid almost broke the record in 2011/12, while Barcelona feature more than any other club in the top 20.
