Leeds United are set to take their summer spending on new players to over €50 million, with the imminent signing of goalkeeper James Trafford. According to The Athletic, the English shot-stopper is set to make the move to Elland Road from Manchester City for a fee of €47m. That would take Leeds’ spending this summer to €84m, with Man City’s income from player sales set to rise to €69m.

Trafford made the move to Man City last year, when he departed Burnley in a deal worth €31.2m. However, shortly after making the move to the Etihad club, Man City pounced on want-away Paris Saint-Germain keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who knocked Trafford back in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order. As such, Trafford made just 17 appearances in all competitions for the club last season and is now set to depart for some much-needed first-team football at Leeds.

However, Trafford doesn’t just make the move to Leeds as the club’s record signing but also becomes the most expensive shot-stopper of all time. Following his €17.3m move to Burnley in 2023 and the subsequent move back to Man City for €31.2m, this move to Leeds means that Trafford has accumulated an impressive €95.3m in transfer fees over the course of his career.

That, somewhat surprisingly, makes him the most expensive goalkeeper in the history of the sport. The only shot-stopper that comes close to Trafford’s total career transfer fees is current Arsenal back-up keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, whose four moves to date have cost a total of €90.4m. In third place is Liverpool star Alisson, who has cost a total of €80.5m over the course of his career. Current Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale sits fourth with €75.5m in accumulated career transfer fees, with Gianluigi Buffon’s solitary transfer to Juventus for €52.9m placing him fifth on the list.
