There’s still over three weeks remaining before the transfer window shuts and it’s anticipated that business will ramp up significantly in the closing weeks. Historically, leading clubs usually conduct their biggest deals later in the window after major international tournaments and that’s the feeling after the World Cup concluded. As ever, English Premier League clubs have been the biggest spenders this summer with over € 1billion already splurged on new additions.

Unsurprisingly, the top five biggest spending clubs are all English with Tottenham leading the way ahead of Chelsea. Morgan Rogers’ €138 million move from Aston Villa to Chelsea is the most expensive signing this summer but that fee could feasibly be eclipsed before September 1st. Several major deals are expected to be completed by the deadline and we’ve analysed the transfer priorities for the ‘big six’ Premier League clubs before the window shuts.

The transfer priorities for the ‘Big Six’

Arsenal

With Arsenal completing the signing of Bruno Guimaraes, Mikel Arteta must sign an elite left-winger. The Gunners are brilliantly coached from a defensive perspective but they lack a true world-class superstar in attack. Bukayo Saka is a very good option from the right but their options from the left are pretty worrying. Leandro Trossard’s departure for Besiktas was compensated by the arrivals of Christos Tzolis with Gabriel Martinelli the only natural senior left-winger, but realistically neither are good enough to be guaranteed starters.

It’s no secret that Arsenal had a genuine interest in Vinicius Junior and he would've represented a genuine world-class addition but he committed his future to Real Madrid. Therefore, Arsenal will need to pursue alternative targets and it will be fascinating who they will recruit to solve their issues at left-wing.

Chelsea

It seems almost foolish to suggest Chelsea need to sign another player given their bloated squad size and trimming their group is probably their biggest priority. The Blues have an excellent track-record in recent years of offloading unwanted stars for respectable fees and they’ll be confident of balancing their books through sales.

In terms of incomings, Chelsea ideally need a new goalkeeper but it appears they will show faith in Mike Penders upon his return from his successful loan spell at Strasbourg. Therefore, a new centre-back will be high on the agenda in the remaining weeks of the window. Trevor Chabolah has left while there’s uncertainty around Badiashile, Wesley Fofana and Toisin. They have a number of younger options and Reece James could be deployed as a right centre-back but it’s an area to keep an eye on.

Liverpool

Liverpool’s priority is abundantly clear; sign a right-winger to replace Mohamed Salah. There’s growing unrest amongst the Liverpool support that they’ve yet to find a replacement for the Egyptian king. Anfield chiefs have known for more than four months of their requirement to find a new right-winger and that issue remains unresolved with their Premier League opener against Newcastle drawing closer.

Bradley Barcola is Liverpool’s leading target to replace Salah but reaching an agreement with PSG is proving difficult. The Champions League holders want around €170m for the French international with Liverpool reluctant to pay above €120m after being burned last summer on the expensive arrivals of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Barcola would be an excellent addition, but he won’t be cheap and it’s unclear whether Liverpool will move closer to PSG’s asking price.

Manchester City

Enzo Maresca has inherited an excellent squad from his mentor Pep Guardiola and that’s been strengthened by the €135m signing of Elliot Anderson. Manchester City will realistically need to re-enter the market for another central midfielder with Rodri increasingly likely to depart for Barcelona. Man City have been strongly linked to Ayooub Bouaddi but will face strong competition for the Lille midfielder.

It would leave City with a relatively young and inexperienced midfield with Rodri and Bernardo Silva departing. Elsewhere, City have been strongly linked with Pedro Neto but they already have a plethora of talented attackers and a natural right-back could still be on their shopping list.

Manchester United

It’s been a relatively quiet window so far at Old Trafford with only two senior arrivals and a net spend of around €46m. The priority ahead of the summer window was strengthening central midfield with Casemiro departing and that has partly been addressed with Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos arriving. Despite briefs that Manchester United might not add another central midfielder due to Mason Mount’s pre-season form, this would be unwise as the former Chelsea man can’t be relied on with his injury record.

Squad list

A physically dominant midfielder, who can cover the ground well must be targeted before the window closes. Aurilen Tchoumanei was the dream target but it’s highly unlikely that he will depart Real Madrid. Elsewhere, United need another left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw with Lewis Hall identified but Newcastle United won’t sanction his exit.

Tottenham

Tottenham have been extremely active in the market already with the high profile arrivals of Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Matheus Fernandes while Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi were shrewd free transfers. Roberto De Zerbi has strengthened his defensive and midfield options but they need to address their misfiring attack.

Tottenham Hotspur
Squad list

It’s understood that a new striker is top of the agenda for De Zerbi and that’s understandable as it would be unwise to rely upon Dominic Solanke or Richarlison. Tottenham have lots of wingers on their books but they could do with offloading several options to add an elite option.
