Nico Paz appeared destined to return to Real Madrid this summer but he will now join Como on a permanent transfer in an incredible deal. Paz has been a revelation since moving to the Italian club from Madrid for €6 million in 2024 to earn his current reputation as one of the best young players in Europe. It’s no secret that Madrid inserted a favourable buy-back clause in the deal to sell Paz to Como and it was essentially a prerequisite to the Spanish giants agreeing to his departure.

Earlier this week, Madrid activated their €9m buy-back option, before selling him to the Italian club for €60m – it will become the 8th most expensive transfer in Serie A history. It will represent a remarkable €51m profit for Madrid after Paz made it clear that he wanted to continue his journey with Como. Madrid, however, will retain control of his future as they’ve inserted a buy-back clause, believed to be €80m.The Lombardy club have enjoyed a stratospheric rise through the Italian pyramid in recent years and will play in the Champions League next season. That’s only been possible due to massive financial resources, but Cesc Fàbregas has also developed a reputation as one of the best young coaches in Europe. Inter Milan and Arsenal were interested in Paz but he will now rejoin Como as their record signing.

Nico Paz’s excellence at Como

Paz has blossomed under Fabregas to deliver on his unquestionable potential and Madrid always believed in the attacking midfielder. Ex-boss Carlo Ancelotti previously labelled him ‘the future of Madrid’ and Paz himself has made no secret of his desire to return to the Spanish capital, but that desire changed in recent months. The 21-year-old’s ascent at Como can be evidenced by his market value soaring by €70m, from €10m to €80m, with Como acquiring him for €20m below that.

Paz was one of the most productive U21 players across Europe’s top five leagues this season. The starlet has contributed 21 goal contributions in 40 games – 13 goals and eight assists – to figurehead Como’s push for Champions League qualification, in just their second season in the Italian top-flight – only Lamine Yamal and Yan Diomande contributed more. Paz’s risealso led to him being named in the Argentina squad for the World Cup and he can become one of the best players in the world over the next five years.
