It’s been a relatively quiet transfer window for Manchester United but a couple of new additions are still expected before the start of September. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have strengthened the midfield ranks but United are still weighing up another signing in that position. Another area of the pitch that United are expected to address is left-back to provide competition to Luke Shaw for the starting berth.

Squad list

It’s understood that Lewis Hall is United’s priority left-back target but it will be incredibly difficult to extract him from Newcastle United. The Magpies have already lost several established stars and are determined not to sell Hall with their desire to extend his contract. The England international is contracted until 2029 and Newcastle will demand an offer significantly higher than his €40 million market value to even consider a sale. It’s near impossible to envisage Hall moving to Old Trafford this summer and we’ve therefore analysed five alternatives and ranked them in terms of who would be the best option.

Five left-backs targets for Manchester United

Myles Lewis-Skelly

Myles Lewis-Skelly should be United’s priority target, especially as he can cover two priority positions – left-back and central midfield. Arsenal will be reluctant to sell their academy graduate and he would be the most expensive option on this list but there’s been murmurs that Lewis-Skelly could leave. The 19-year-old has been pushed down the pecking order in midfield by the arrival of Bruno Guimarães and he’s not first-choice at left-back. Lewis-Skelly is a tremendous prospect and he’s already accumulated good experience at the highest level.

Left-Back

€45.00m

The English international is ambitious and could be open to leaving his boyhood club with regular opportunities expected to be limited. Lewis-Skelly is valued at €45m on Transfermarkt but United would realistically need to pay in excess of €60m for him. Arsenal have an abysmal record of selling players with €38m their record departure and making pure profit on an academy graduate will help balance the books to offset Mikel Arteta’s vast spending.

Dayann Méthalie

Dayann Méthalie is a fascinating option and his potential is massive. The 20-year-old was outstanding for Toulouse last season, making 27 appearances in Ligue 1 to attract interest from major European clubs. Sunderland have pursued Méthalie this summer and recently had a €33m bid rejected but United could feasibly hijack that deal.

Left-Back

€18.00m

Old Trafford chiefs have been determined not to overpay on targets this summer and an offer of around €40m should be enough for Toulouse to sell. That figure would be acceptable for United and Mehtalie could provide back-up for Shaw with huge room for development to eventually displace him. The 20-year-old is already a France U21 international and is viewed as the future left-back for the senior team.

Jorge Salinas

Jorge Salinas has emerged as a potential low-cost option and he’s on United’s radar, according to the left-back. It’s understood that Salinas has a €16m release clause in his contract, which will be incredibly appealing to United. The 19-year-old was virtually ever-present as Racing Santander won LaLiga2 last season to secure promotion to the top-flight.

Left-Back

€8.00m

Salinas is highly-rated in Spain as he’s represented his country at youth level and Barcelona have also registered an interest. The major drawback to the prospect is he’s yet to play in a major league and must be viewed as a project player with the jump from the second-tier of Spanish football to the Premier League enormous.

Joaquin Seys

United have also been linked with Club Brugge talent Joaquin Seys. The 21-year-old was instrumental in Brugge’s title success last season and he featured for Belgium at the World Cup. Valued at €20m on Transfermarkt, Brugge are likely to demand close to double that to sell Seys this summer and they are under no financial pressure to sell. Seys has more experience than Salinas but that must be offset by the cost of the deal.

David Raum

There’s been strong speculation that David Raum is a serious option for United but the majority of those reports stem from Germany. Raum is a very accomplished left-back with numerous strong qualities but it would be an unusual move given the RB Leipzig defender is 28 years old. Shaw has just turned 31 and is a superior player to Raum, so the mooted move would make little sense and a younger option with a higher ceiling should be prioritised.
