The Nerazzurri had identified Jones as the ideal replacement in the January transfer window when Italy international Davide Frattesi appeared to be on his way to Nottingham Forest.
It was going to be a loan with option to buy for circa €40m at the end of the season, but without an agreement to extend his contract at Anfield first, the deal could not go through.
Jones now prepared to join Inter
The 25-year-old’s current contract runs to June 2027, and the situation has still not been resolved, but it means now Inter could make a proposal to buy him outright at a much lower fee.
Sportitalia claim that Jones has given the all-clear to a San Siro transfer, so now it is up to the clubs to agree on terms.
Frattesi again seems to be on his way out after struggling to get regular playing time under Cristian Chivu, a continuation of the problems he had with previous coach Simone Inzaghi.
Jones is a product of the Liverpool youth academy who spent his entire career with the Reds, this season contributing two goals and three assists in 45 competitive appearances.
