Is John Stones England’s greatest ever CB? Win % compared ahead of Inter Milan move

©TM/IMAGO
John Stones has won it all with Manchester City. Question marks were raised when the Sky Blues splashed €55.6 million back in 2016, but over the past eight years, he has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world. Although, he largely still doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Injuries have no doubt hampered his time at the Etihad, but for club and country, he has still been a reliable stalwart. Stones hasn’t missed a major tournament with England since the 2018 World Cup and has been one of the Three Lions’ best performers in each of the tournaments that have followed.

This summer, his stint at Man City came to an end, as the 32-year-old became a free agent, and he is now set to sign for Italian giants Inter Milan. Reports suggest that Inter are in negotiations to sign Stones, with talks ongoing with the hope that the transfer can be completed by the end of the week. The move would see Stones link up with former Manchester City team-mate Manuel Akanji, who has joined the Serie A side on a permanent basis following a season-long loan deal in the 2025-26 season. So what kind of player are Inter getting? Potentially England’s greatest ever centre-back?
Is John Stones England's greatest ever centre-back?
Down the years, England have had some legendary centre-halves. From Bobby Moore to John Terry, from Terry Butcher to Rio Ferdinand. It’s perhaps harder to argue that also taking club football into account that Stones is England’s greatest ever, but when it comes to delivering for the Three Lions few have done it better. Of course, Moore is the outlier in that department. Nevertheless, when it comes to win percentage, no centre-back can top Stones. He has a 64.9% win rate from his 94 Three Lions caps.

As illustrated in the graphic above, that beats second-placed Terry, who won 64.1% of his 78 England caps. Gary Cahill is third with a 62.3% win rate form his 61 caps. Harry Maguire is fourth with 62.1% win rate from 66 caps. Legendary 1966 captain Moore takes fifth with a 62% win rate from his 108 caps. Also included in the top are Ferdinand in seventh with 56.8% and Sol Campbell in ninth with 54.8%.
