Can Ipswich break Sunderland record? Most money spent by Premier League’s promoted clubs

©IMAGO
Last season, it was refreshing to see both Sunderland and Leeds United beat the drop in the Premier League. In the previous two seasons, all three promoted sides were relegated straight back to the Championship. The Black Cats even went one step further and sensationally qualified for Europe. But that came at a cost. Last summer, Sunderland broke the record for the most money ever spent by a club promoted to the Premier League. It paid off and their recruitment was excellent, but the same can’t be said for some other promoted sides. So, could Ipswich Town break their record this summer? And where do Coventry City and Hull City rank? Let’s find out.
Clubs promoted to the Premier League with highest spends
As aforementioned, leading the way are now Sunderland with a total spend of €188.7 million on new recruits last summer. The most expensive of which were midfielder Habib Diarra (€31.2m) from Strasbourg, winger Simon Adingra (€24m) from Brighton, and playmaker Enzo Le Fée (€23m) from Roma. They finished eighth last season. Nottingham Forest take second after the club invested heavily in a number of new recruits after being promoted in the 2021/22 campaign. They brought in 13 players for a fee, spending a grand total of €155.2 million, and managed to just survive the drop – finishing 17th in the 2022/23 season.
In third are Aston Villa, who were promoted in the 2019/20 season, and spent €148.6m the following summer – they also survived and have really pushed on since. Burnley last summer take fourth. However, despite the Clarets spending €131.5m, they were relegated in 19th position. Ipswich this summer now already rank fifth. They have spent €127.9m, with their most expensive signings being Brazilian forward Emersson (€28m), winger Abdul Fatawu (€23.5m), and midfielder Florentino (€18.7m). The Tractor Boys are expected to spend more and could come close to Sunderland’s record or even surpass it.
Two sides that were promoted back to the Premier League in the 2024/25 season feature in sixth and seventh. Ipswich spent €125m, whilst Southampton splashed out €117.2m – both were relegated. Leeds last summer take eighth with a €113.7m which ultimately led to their survival. Fulham take ninth having spent €113.1m in the 2018/19 campaign – they went down that season – whilst Burnley complete the top 10 having spent €110.5m in the 2023/24 season only to go down. When it comes to the other promoted clubs this summer so far, Coventry have spent €100.7m, whilst Hull have spent just €38.8m.
