Rangers have completed the signing of Daisuke Yokota from Hannover on a three-year contract. Transfermarkt understands that the Ibrox side will pay an initial €3.25 million for the Japanese winger, plus a potential €500k in add-ons based on if Rangers achieve their objectives. After a successful loan spell last season, Yokota joined Hannover permanently from Genk in the summer for €2m but made his desire to depart clear after they failed to secure promotion to the Bundesliga.

There was significant interest in Yokota after an impressive spell at Hannover, which yielded nine goals in 31 appearances in 2.Bundesliga but he opted for Rangers and expressed his delight at joining the Scottish Premiership giants. “I’m really excited to be joining Rangers. This is a massive club with a fantastic history, passionate supporters and high ambitions so it’s a proud moment for me.” Right-winger has been a problem position for Rangers for several years and supporters will hope Yokota can prove an inspired signing. To get the lowdown on the 26-year-old, we spoke to Thomas Detering and Alexander Binder, two German football experts at Transfermarkt and Hannover fans.
German insight on Daisuke Yokota
Thomas Detering
“Yokota is a small, agile and pacey winger whose game is primarily built around dribbling and one-on-one situations. The right winger can also be deployed on the left or in a slightly more central attacking midfield role. Yokota thrives on his exceptional mobility in tight spaces, his low centre of gravity, quick acceleration and ability to draw opponents into dribblings. This allows him to create overloads on the wing in order to set up the next pass or finish.
“He shows good game intelligence in transition moments and always looks to play vertically after regaining possession. In the final third, however, he is more of a creative provider and a disruptive presence than an out-and-out goalscorer. At Hannover, he developed into one of the best scorers in Christian Titz’s team last season. Due to his lack of physicality, however, he is not a player for robust duels or aerial battles.”
Alexander Binder
“Yokota was by far Hannover 96’s best dribbler and ranked among the top three dribblers in the entire 2. Bundesliga. He can leave defenders dizzy with his combination of pace and close ball control, and despite standing just 1.71 metres tall, he is remarkably strong and resilient. His flair on the ball is both a blessing and a curse.

Career stats
“On more than one occasion, he wasted promising situations with the final pass or finish, but he is also capable of moments of pure brilliance. His departure is a major loss for Hannover. Had the club secured promotion, he would almost certainly have stayed for a Bundesliga campaign. If he becomes a regular for Rangers, he should be capable of reaching around 15 goal contributions in the 2026/27 season.”
