Djed Spence was one of England’s unlikely stars at this summer’s World Cup as he put in some heroic displays for the Three Lions on their way to the semi-finals. The 26-year-old full-back is now set to depart Tottenham to sign for Italian giants Inter Milan – where he will join fellow England teammate John Stones. A verbal agreement is reportedly in place now with a transfer fee worth €31.5 million thought to have been agreed between the clubs.
Spence will join a recent surge of English players going to ply their trade in Serie A, after the likes of Stones, Trevoh Chalobah, Fikayo Tomori, and Tammy Abraham have swapped English football for Italy. But where will he rank among the most expensive British players to ever move to Serie A? Let’s find out.
Most expensive British players in Serie A history
The record British signing in Serie A history will remain with Abraham, after the striker's €41m move from Chelsea to Roma in 2021. Second goes to Fikayo Tomori who left Stamford Bridge for AC Milan for €35m in the same season. Spence's upcoming expected move to Inter will now rank him third on the list with the mooted €31.5m fee. That just beats Scott McTominay's €30.5m from Manchester United to Napoli which now ranks fourth. Trevoh Chalobah's €30m transfer from Chelsea to Como this summer completes the top five.
