Real Madrid are set to make history with the signing of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande. Transfermarkt understands that the two clubs have struck a deal that will take the Ivory Coast international to the Spanish capital for an initial fee of €125 million – with add-ons potentially raising the final fee to as much as €140m. The initial fee alone will make Diomande the most expensive winger ever – surpassing the €120.8m Madrid paid for Eden Hazard in 2019 – and if all clauses are met he’ll become the fifth most expensive player of all time. So which Madrid players will be making way for the club’s new record signing?

The most obvious and likely departure from Madrid this summer in the right wing position is Franco Mastantuono. The 18-year-old talent made the move to Los Blancos last summer from River Plate for a sizable sum of €45m. However, despite making no less than 35 appearances in his first season with Madrid, Mastantuono was largely used as a substitute and only managed to bag three goals and one assist in that time. As such, the player has been heavily linked with a loan move to Fiorentina, where he will be tasked with learning his trade in the Italian top flight. Whether that deal will eventually lead to a permanent move remains to be seen.

Another right winger that will almost certainly be considering his options this summer is Brahim Díaz. The Morocco international joined Madrid in 2019 from Man City and, after impressive loan spells at AC Milan, broke into the Los Blancos first team and became a regular starter. Last season Díaz made 42 appearances for the club, but his return of two goals and nine assists was somewhat underwhelming. There’s every chance that José Mourinho will look to keep Díaz as a squad player, but the 27-year-old talent has also been heavily linked with a move to Fenerbahce, Besiktas and perhaps even a return to AC Milan.

Had things gone differently, Madrid may have already had a large hole on the right side of their squad that Diomande could have filled. Before Rodrygo picked up a horrible cruciate ligament tear injury in March, the Brazilian international was widely expected to force a move away from Madrid in this summer window. The 25-year-old talent will now, most likely, look to depart the club in the January transfer window, but it remains to be seen whether the same clubs that once showed an interest at the start of the year will still be willing to make an offer. Either way, it’s almost certain that Diomande will be the long-term replacement for the want-away Brazilian star.

Although not technically a right winger, there’s little doubt that Madrid signing a new star for that side of the pitch will squeeze the game time of Arda Güler, who has played 36 of his 112 games to date for the club on the right flank. After impressing for the club last season, it’s unlikely that Güler will be eyeing an exit from the club anytime soon. However, speculative reports in Spain have suggested that none other than Paris Saint-Germain have made offers for the Turkish international this summer. And if the 21-year-old talent is worried about his spot in Mourinho’s starting XI this season, he may well consider his options before the summer window closes.

Few believe that Diomande will join Madrid to play on the left wing and challenge Vinicius Junior’s spot in the team, but the Ivorian’s arrival could be the first step in Mourinho’s rejigging the team’s tactics to accommodate the departure of the Brazilian star. It’s well-reported that Vinicius Jr is in the middle of heated negotiations with the club over a new contract and has subsequently been linked with a move to Arsenal. Although Diomande will be tasked with playing on the right, his arrival may herald the departure of Vinicius Jr and allow Kylian Mbappé to finally take up his favoured role on the left wing.
