Jamie Vardy has been handed a starring role in Cremonese’s survival bid, with local newspaper La Provincia di Cremona urging the club to “hang on to the man of impossible feats” ahead of Saturday evening’s crucial clash with Como.

The Grigiorossi must win and hope that Lecce fail to beat Genoa simultaneously.

Indeed, it is a combination of results that would keep them in Serie A on the final day. Vardy, the former Leicester City striker, is being looked to for the decisive goals that could make the difference.

Cremonese coach Giampaolo on final game as club urged to hold on to Vardy

Coach Marco Giampaolo struck a measured tone in his pre-match press conference, via TuttoMercatoWeb.

“Beyond the difficulties from a standings perspective and the incredibly tough fixture, we are called once again to prove ourselves, as we have been throughout,” he said.

“When you are down there chasing points, every match is heavy and complicated. At a certain point you learn to live with the precariousness, and that is fine. Difficulties measure you. It is in those moments that you see how people react and how they behave.”
