Chelsea complete Morgan Rogers signing – Blues beat Arsenal to stunning €138m transfer

Chelsea have completed the €138 million transfer of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a British transfer record. The fee takes over the €135m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson already this summer. Rogers, who has a current market value of €90m, but is set to rise in value in Wednesday’s World Cup market value updated has signed a contract until 2033 with the two-time Champions League winners.

The 23-year-old was also a top target for champions Arsenal, but Rogers will now join Xabi Alonso’s revolution at Stamford Bridge, after the the Gunners refused to pay Villa’s asking price. Alonso is said to have played an ‘instrumental’ role in the deal, which takes Chelsea’s spending to over €250m for the summer. He has become their sixth new signing after Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, Denner, Dastan Satpaev and Valentin Barco.
The attacking midfielder was one of the most-coveted players in the transfer market this summer. PSG, Bayern Munich and Liverpool were all linked with a move at some stage during the summer, although they were put off by Aston Villa's initial asking price of €158m. However, Rogers' desire for a new challenge is thought to have played some part in Villa's willingness to let him leave, as they signed Johan Manzambi from Freiburg in a deal worth a potential €70m with add-ons included.
The move was announced on social media just hours before England's third-place playoff against France at the World Cup, with Rogers expected to feature in the game. The attacking midfielder was used scarcely by Thomas Tuchel during the tournament before starting the semi-final against Argentina, setting up Anthony Gordon's opening goal.
