Celtic sack Wilfried Nancy after 32 days – Shortest managerial term in Old Firm history

Celtic have announced that Wilfried Nancy has been dismissed as manager just eight games into his tenure. The Frenchman was officially appointed on December 3rd and promised ‘exciting, attacking, winning football’ but it’s been an unmitigated disaster. Nancy lost six out of eight games in charge and the disgruntled Celtic faithful were calling for his dismissal just weeks into his time in charge. The final nail in the coffin for Nancy was the 3-1 defeat at home to arch rivals Rangers on Saturday, which left them trailing league leaders Hearts by six points.

The 48-year-old had penned a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Scottish champions after an impressive spell with Columbus Crew in the MLS. But Nancy has been sacked after just 32 days in charge, which is the shortest spell of any Old Firm history – eclipsing the previous unwanted record set by Russel Martin at Rangers this season. Additionally, Paul Tisdale – who was instrumental in Nancy’s appointment – has also been dismissed with the head of football operations’ position untenable.

A Celtic club statement read: “Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect. The Club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future. Wilfried's assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes. The Club can also confirm that Paul Tisdale has left his position as Head of Football Operations. We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role. A further update will be provided to supporters as soon as is practical.”
Nancy will undoubtedly go down as the worst manager in Celtic's illustrious history and he was guilty of trying to change too much, too soon. Martin O'Neill enjoyed great success during his interim spell in charge, winning seven games from eight but Nancy immediately tried to implement his preferred 3-4-3 formation. The search is now on for Celtic to find their new manager with the Hoops' next game against Dundee United on Saturday
