Last week, Newcastle United’s now former boss Eddie Howe admitted that he was powerless to stop Bruno Guimarães leaving this summer to join Premier League champions Arsenal. Howe has now left the club, with Matthias Jaissle set to replace him, and an end now appears to be in sight to one of this summer’s biggest transfer sagas.

Club to club negotiations between Newcastle and Arsenal have now been confirmed and an agreement is expected to soon be reached for around €85 million-€90m. Some of the latest reports suggest that Newcastle have rejected Arsenal's bid for the player, but this is believed to be more related to the first bid and it is believed that both clubs now know what it will take to get the deal done.
What we know about Bruno Guimarães' future
In late June, we reported that Premier League champions Arsenal had reportedly made a verbal offer to Newcastle to try to sign midfielder Guimarães this summer. The proposal was thought to be worth around €65m, but was verbally rejected by the St James’ Park club, who were reluctant to sell the Brazilian this summer.
However, the player has reportedly informed Newcastle of his desire to leave the club and join Arsenal this summer. The Gunners are thought to be willing to pay up to around €90m – which is well over the player's current market value on Transfermarkt (€70m). The 28-year-old crashed out of the World Cup with Brazil against Norway after Guimarães missed a penalty. He will turn 29 years old in November.

Guimarães joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 for €42.1m and has established himself as a key part of Eddie Howe’s side and one of the best midfielders in the league. He has made over 150 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 goals from centre-midfield. He is also an important player for Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, starting all three games at the World Cup. Newcastle have already sold winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona this summer in a deal worth €80m, with a sell-on clause also included, as well as Sandro Tonali, who signed for Tottenham Hotspur for €108m.

Why Arteta is keen to sign Guimarães
Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements, after Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi were showing serious signs of fatigue towards the end of last season, after being overworked in the Gunners’ engine room. Mikel Arteta’s team are also set to let go of the experienced Christian Nørgaard, who arrived from Brentford last summer, but is now set to depart for Everton after making just seven Premier League appearances last term.
In past fixtures against Arsenal, Guimaráes has been involved in controversy, including when he appeared to elbow Jorginho in the head in a fixture in 2023. Newcastle will not be able to offer Guimarães any European football next term, after finishing in 12th place in the Premier League last season. Guimarães and Rice could go on to form one of the most feared midfield partnerships in the world.
