Barcelona have announced the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United. It was a long wait on Friday as Barca planned to announce the deal around 1pm but a paperwork issue meant it wasn’t finalised until late evening. Despite differing reports, Transfermarkt also understands that Barca will pay €80 million for Gordon, plus €10m in add-one and there is a sell-on percentage included. All parties were keen to finalise the deal before Gordon jets off to the United States for the World Cup.

The deal has accelerated significantly in the last few days with Barcelona and Newcastle determined to find a swift resolution. Bayern Munich also held formal discussions with the Magpies but were unwilling to match their valuation. The 25-year-old was contracted to Newcastle until 2030 and they’ve secured a fee significantly higher than his market value on Transfermarkt of €60m. Newcastle will also net a substantial profit on the €45.6m fee that they paid Everton for Gordon in 2023.

It is unclear whether Gordon’s imminent arrival in Catalonia will have consequences for Marcus Rashford’s mooted move to Barcelona. Gordon’s fellow England international enjoyed a productive loan spell in Spain from Manchester United with 28 goal contributions and Barca possess a €30m buy-option. Transfermarkt understands that expires on June 15th and there’s been no breakthrough in talks with reports that Barca want to lower that fee. Gordon endured a difficult domestic campaign with Newcastle but he’s the joint-third top goalscorer in the Champions League this season with 10 goals in 12 games. The winger becomes Newcastle’s second biggest sale in history and he will rank as Barcelona’s seventh most expensive signing.
