As Morgan Rogers completed his British record transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea, one can expect there were some shaking heads further north at the Etihad stadium. Rogers came though the famed Manchester City academy before being sold to Championship side Middlesbrough in 2023 for just €1.2m. Just three years later, he now switches clubs for €138m – a 115 per cent higher fee.

There's no doubt that Man City's academy has become a profitable source of income for the club, but Rogers joins a growing list of 'those who got away'. It's impossible to think that the 23 year old would not play a key role for this current Man City team should he still be in Sky Blue. Here at Transfermarkt, we have compiled a start-studded XI of former Man City academy players and it makes for an incredible team.

Most valuable former Man City academy XI

In between the sticks is goalkeeper James Trafford, who is still at Man City, but via a spell at Burnley. The England shot-stopper has a current market value of €25m, but was sold to the Clarets for €17.3m before being brought back for €31.2m last summer. He may yet move on again after being displaced as no.1 by Gianluigi Donnarumma. At right-back is Jeremie Frimpong (€35m). The Dutchman left City for Celtic for just €380k in 2019 before a move to Bayer Leverkusen and then subsequently Liverpool last summer. At left-back is 21-year-old Nico O’Reilly (€70m) who is still a Sky Blue.

The centre-back positions pair Southampton's Taylor Harwood-Bellis (€20m) with Barcelona’s Eric García (€40m). The former left City for the Saints for €23m in 2024, whilst the latter, who just won the World Cup with Spain, left on a free transfer to return to Catalonia in 2021. In central midfield is Roméo Lavia (€22m) and Felix Nmecha (€50m). The former left the Sky Blues for Southampton for €22.3m in 2022, before moving to Chelsea a year later for €62.1m. However, injuries have blighted his time at Stamford Bridge thus far. The latter left for free to Wolfsburg before joining Borussia Dortmund, and is now being linked with another big move this summer.

Rogers (€90m) now takes up the left-wing position. Phil Foden (€70m), who had a difficult season last term but remains an important player for Man City, takes the no.10 spot. On the right is Cole Palmer (€100m). He was a revelation in his first two seasons at Chelsea after his €40m switch from Man City and became one of the Premier League’s top stars. Performances dipped last term, but there will still be some regrets from City in the manner they let him leave. Finally, Liam Delap (€28m), now also of Chelsea, leads the line.
