Now that the World Cup is over, we can look back on the 2025/26 football season and it all it brought. For some it was historic – Arsenal won their first Premier League in 22 years, whilst Paris Saint-Germain became just the second team to retain the Champions League. For some it was pretty disastrous – Tottenham flirted with relegation, whilst Chelsea also missed out on European football altogether. But for others, it was tiring more than anything else.
Transfermarkt has compiled the list of the players to have played the most matches for club and country across the 2025/26 campaign. We have limited it to players that played for clubs in the top 20 leagues (due to some other leagues overlapping seasons in that timeframe) and included all senior professional games from July 15, 2025 (after last summer’s Club World Cup).
Players to play most games last season
Leading the way are three players who have played as many as 71 matches for club and country. One of which is attacker Morgan Rogers. The 24 year old is on the verge of a British record transfer from Aston Villa to Chelsea this summer, but the Blues will be acquiring a player who has just had an intense season. Rogers racked up the games and minutes for Villa and England across 2025/26. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also racked up 71 games fro Liverpool and Argentina across the campaign. As did attacking midfielder Hans Vanaken for Club Brugge and Belgium.

There are then four players who played 69 matches. Virgil van Dijk for Liverpool and the Netherlands, Declan Rice for Arsenal and England, Michael Olise for Bayern Munich and France and Benjamin Nygren for Celtic and Sweden. Defender Brandon Mechele racked up 68 games for Club Brugge and Belgium – as did striker Alexander Sørloth for Atlético Madrid and Norway.
England defender Marc Guéhi and midfielder Elliot Anderson complete the top 10, with the former having played 67 matches for Crystal Palace, Manchester City and England across the season and the latter having accumulated the same number of games for Nottingham Forest and the Three Lions. There are then a further four players who managed 66 games including Viktor Gyökeres and Vinicius Junior.
