Sebastian Berhalter set to join Middlesbrough – Whitecaps receive fee below market value

Sebastian Berhalter is set to join Championship side Middlesbrough, with the Vancouver Whitecaps set to receive around $2m (€1.75m). Transfermarkt can confirm an initial report by The Athletic that a transfer is close and that documents on a deal have already been exchanged between the two parties. The fee is significantly below Berhalter’s current market value of €8m, but with his contract up at the end of the season, the Whitecaps were set to lose the midfielder on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a significant star for the Whitecaps over the last two seasons, becoming the club’s most important player, and also featuring for the United States men’s national team at the World Cup. Signed from the Columbus Crew for just $100,000 in General Allocation Money in 2022, Berhalter has seen his market value rise steadily from €500,000 to now €8m.

While losing Berhalter will be significant for the Whitecaps, there is also no doubt that it was time for the midfielder to move on. The son of former USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has outgrown MLS and is ready now to test himself in Europe. The Championship might be an odd landing spot at first glance, as he could probably play in a top five league right away. But Middlesbrough are an ambitious club, and Aidan Morris, a close friend of his, is already playing at the club. Morris will without a doubt help with his integration in England.
