Newcastle complete Aladji Bamba signing from Monaco – just 1 full senior game played

Newcastle United’s busy transfer window continues. The Magpies have now completed a deal worth up to €41 million with Monaco for young midfielder Aladji Bamba. The 20-year-old has been anounced by Newcastle and the up front fee is set to be €35.5m with a further €5.5m in potential add-ons. Bamba is a France Under-20 international, but has only made 25 senior appearances in his career for Monaco since his debut last August. The defensive midfielder has become Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer. He has a current market value of just €18m.

The club have already brought in goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, midfielder Sean Steur and winger Bazoumana Touré. However, Newcastle missed out on their top midfield target Johan Manzambi, who opted to join Aston Villa instead, and were also beaten to winger Victor Muñoz by Liverpool. This comes after Newcastle sold midfielder Sandro Tonali to Tottenham for €108m, with rumours suggesting fellow midfielders Joe Willock and Bruno Guimarães could also move on this summer. What kind of player is Aladji Bamba?
"Honestly hard to say how good he is and how far he can go as he has only played 25 games at professional level (18 in Ligue 1)," admits Transfermarkt France Content Manager Lucas Hybord. “At 18 years of age, he won the Gambardella (U18 Coupe de France) with the Monaco youth team, playing every game in the process. After a slow start to last season, he started most games in the second half, of the campaign including big ones vs Paris Saint-Germain (in Ligue 1 and Champions League), and against Lyon, etc. So manager Sébastien Pogognoli trusted him despite his young age.”
So what kind of midfielder is Bamba? "He’s a technical player (played futsal as a kid) and solid defensive midfielder," reveals Hybord. "He is able to play in either a two or a three in the middle of the park, and loves to fight – expect lots of interceptions and a good anticipation. He plays with intensity but does struggle to do it for 90 minutes. So far, he has only played one full game at senior level. So he needs to strengthen this side of his game. Perhaps the physicality of the Premier League could be a good place for him."
