The captain has been out of action since limping off with a calf strain during the Champions League play-off defeat to Bodo/Glimt on February 18.

The recovery process cannot be rushed with such a delicate muscle area, and so Cristian Chivu has not called him up for any of the following games.

According to the latest reports, Lautaro Martinez has been increasing the amount of work he does on the field, as well as in the gym and with physiotherapy.

Inter are confident that he has fully healed, so now the plan is to gradually get him back to match fitness after more than a month without games.

When the rest of his teammates return from international duty next week, Lautaro Martinez will begin to train with them, and could even start in next weekend’s encounter with Roma.

In the captain’s absence, Inter have seen their lead at the top of the Serie A table whittled down to just six points.

Since his injury, the team picked up just two victories, three draws and two defeats in all competition.
