Alvaro Arbeloa’s stint as the manager of the Real Madrid first team could turn out to be a short-lived one.

Having taken over the reins after Xabi Alonso’s dismissal in January, the former defender could be on his way out at the end of the season as Los Blancos stare at another season without major trophies.

Despite Arbeloa seemingly enjoying the support of the locker room, Real Madrid are expected to swing the axe come the end of the season, with work already being done to secure a replacement as the new manager.

Jose Mourinho return gaining traction

Now, according to Record in Portugal, the possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Real Madrid as manager is alive and gaining strength.

The Portuguese tactician spent three years as manager at the Santiago Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013, and is currently in charge of SL Benfica, where he has a contract until 2027.

However, as per the report, the 63-year-old ‘Special One’ is a name being discussed in Florentino Perez’s office of late as a possible candidate to take the reins of the team.

In fact, the Portuguese publication goes on to further add that there could be some movement on this front in the coming days.

Mourinho had been a popular figure at Real Madrid during his stay and even after leaving. And, he would reportedly love the opportunity to return to the club.

However, his standing at the club might have taken a hit after he supported Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during the racism row involving Vinicius Jr.

In fact, the Portuguese manager was critical of the Real Madrid superstar’s celebrations and behaviour after he scored against his team.

So, it will certainly be interesting to see how things progress and whether Mourinho ends up securing a return to the Bernabeu 13 years after he bid goodbye.
