With the race for UEFA Champions League qualification heating up, we look ahead to Saturday’s marquee Premier League clash with our Chelsea vs Manchester United prediction and preview.

Chelsea vs Man Utd: Key Stats

  • The Opta supercomputer favours a Chelsea win in this game, with the Blues coming out on top in 43.7% of the pre-match simulations, while Manchester United won 29.5% of the time.
  • Chelsea have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League matches against Man Utd at Stamford Bridge (W6 D5).
  • The Chelsea vs Man Utd fixture has ended as a draw 27 times in total – more often than any other clash in Premier League history.

While the Premier League title race between Arsenal and Manchester City has generally dominated the run-in headlines, the battle for Champions League qualification is arguably even tighter.

There are four sides – Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Chelsea – vying for automatic qualification to Europe’s premier competition, and all four will have breathed a sigh of relief after it was confirmed that a fifth-place finish will also guarantee a Champions League spot.

Man Utd remain well placed to secure their highest league finish in three years, though Michael Carrick’s side suffered a setback on Monday with a 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.

Noah Okafor’s first-half brace proved decisive, as United were the masters of their own downfall after Lisandro Martínez was shown a straight red card for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair.

Casemiro‘s late goal – his eighth of the season (a career high for him in the Premier League) and sixth assisted by Bruno Fernandes – was ultimately not enough to spark a comeback.

The Opta supercomputer still backs United to finish third (38.6%), though fourth (35.0%) and fifth (17.3%) remain strong possibilities.

Premier League Predictions 16 April 2026

The defeat to Leeds means that the Red Devils have lost two of their last four games in all competition (W1 D1), after having lost only two of their previous 22 beforehand (W12 D8).

Despite all the ups and downs that another transitional season brings, though, United have not lost back-to-back Premier League matches this season.

What comes as even more of a surprise, then, is that Carrick’s side are one of only two teams, along with Arsenal, yet to suffer successive defeats this term.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are a side for whom successive defeats have become rather commonplace.

The Blues come into Saturday’s match on the back of three straight Premier League losses, the latest of which was a comprehensive 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Man City.

Liam Rosenior’s side previously lost 3-0 to Everton and 1-0 to Newcastle United, with a 3-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain that sealed their exit from the Champions League sandwiched in between those results.

This means that they haven’t won, nor have they scored in Premier League play since a 4-1 victory at Aston Villa at the beginning of March.

That run has dented their hopes of a top-five finish, with the Opta supercomputer predicting the Blues are most likely to come sixth (23.7%).

Moreover, Chelsea have only ever lost four on the trot once this century, between April and May 2023 under Frank Lampard. They haven’t lost four in a row without scoring since between February and March 1998, which coincidentally included a home defeat to Man Utd.

While United’s loss record might not be as poor as their counterparts’, the same can’t quite be said of their recent defensive performances.

They have managed just one clean sheet from their last 21 away Premier League matches. Notably, their last two have both come against sides led by former managers – 3-0 at Ruud van Nistelrooy’s Leicester City in March 2025 and 1-0 at David Moyes’ Everton in February 2026.

With Martínez suspended and Mathijs De Ligt sidelined through injury, Carrick will have been frustrated that Harry Maguire will miss a further match through suspension after his FA misconduct charge was upheld.

Chelsea, meanwhile, could likely see Enzo Fernández return to the fold after his club-enforced suspension. The Argentine has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for the Blues.

He has had the joint-most shots on target of any Chelsea player in the Premier League this season (27), while also creating the most chances overall (51) and in open play (46). Additionally, he has completed the most passes in the final third (459), and leads the Premier League in defensive line-breaking passes (41).

Chelsea vs Man Utd Head-to-Head

The Chelsea vs Man Utd fixture has ended in a draw 27 times – more often than any other match-up in Premier League history. There have also been goals aplenty in this tie, with only seven of those 27 draws finishing goalless, making it the fixture with the most score draws in the competition (20).

Chelsea have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League matches against United (W6 D5) at Stamford Bridge and are aiming to win three consecutive home games against the Red Devils for the first time since April 2006.

Man Utd, meanwhile, are chasing a league double over Chelsea after their 2-1 win in the reverse fixture – something they have achieved only once before, in the 2019-20 season.

Chelsea vs Man Utd Prediction

Home advantage is set to play a major part in Saturday’s clash, with the Opta supercomputer pegging Chelsea as favourites with a 43.7% chance of victory in west London.

Man Utd came out on top in fewer of the 10,000 pre-match simulations (29.5%), while a draw is given a 26.8% chance.
