Fenerbahce have ramped up their pursuit for Rafael Leão as they aim to make a major statement in the transfer market. The Portugal international is widely expected to depart AC Milan this summer and the Süper Lig is his most likely destination. Galatasaray have also been strongly linked with Leão but it’s understood that Fenerbahce lead the race for the 27-year-old. Reports in both Turkey and Italy have claimed that Fenerbahce board member Cihan Kamer has flown out to Milan to meet Leão’s representatives.

Personal terms are unlikely to be an issue for Fener but AC Milan are holding out for a fee of €50m for Leão – the exact same figure as his market value on Transfermarkt. Speaking earlier this week, AC manager Rúben Amorim addressed Leão’s future, stating: “He is our player until anything changes, the team comes first,” said Amorim. “It is not too complicated, for me the team is the most important thing. I will speak with Rafael. I know there is a lot of speculation about some of our players, but they remain ours until anything changes.” It’s understood that Fenerbahce and AC Milan are still some way apart in their valuations but he will unquestionably become Sarı-Lacivertliler’s record signing, if he completes a move to Istanbul.

Fenerbahce’s record signings

It’s widely reported that AC Milan are sticking to their €50m valuation of Leão and that could prove prohibitive for Fenerbahce. Italian reports have claimed that Fener want an initial loan move with a €5m fee plus an obligation to buy around €35m, but that package falls below AC’s asking price.

Moreover, I Rossoneri don’t want a loan deal, favouring a permanent exit and realistically Fener would need to eclipse their transfer record to secure Leão’s signature. The Turkish giants’ record signing arrived this summer when they spent an initial €39m to sign Mason Greenwood from Marseille but any deal for Leão will eclipse that figure.
