João Gomes has completed his move to Aston Villa from Midlands rivals Wolves. The Brazilian international goes to Villa for an initial €40m with a potential €5m in add-ons after negotiations were completed swiftly. It was widely believed that the 25-year-old would join Atlético Madrid this summer but a deal fell through earlier in the window. Villa’s club statement reads: “Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Gomes on a permanent transfer. Welcome, João!”

Gomes was always destined to depart after Wolves' relegation to the English Championship. The talented midfielder joined Wolves from his boyhood club Flamengo for €18.7m in 2023 and made 130 appearances for the club with the Moleneux side set to earn a substantial profit. Aston Villa are determined to reinforce their central midfield options this summer after Youri Tieleman’s move to Manchester United and Amadou Onana’s long-term injury, with Gomes to rank amongst their record signings.

Interestingly, the €40m initial fee that Aston Villa will pay Wolves is exactly the same as his current market value. There’s also add-ons included in the deal based on performance milestones but the initial fee will make the midfielder Aston Villa’s fifth most expensive signing in history. Gomes could rise to fourth if his add-ons are met to take the deal to €45m. Villa’s record signing was Amadou Onana’s €59.4m arrival from Everton in 2024, but that has already been beaten this summer after Unai Emery’s men completed a deal to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for an initial fee of €60m.
