Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned down a bid from Newcastle United for midfielder Lucas Bergvall. The 20-year-old is expected to leave the north London club after spending two seasons in the capital and Newcastle submitted a bid in the region of €55 million, per The Athletic. Howevber, Spurs turned it down without giving them a counter offer and may demand a fee in excess of €60m.

Bergvall has a market value of €35m, with Newcastle's offer significantly higher than the figure. Yet Spurs are keen to extract a high fee for the Sweden international, despite falling down the pecking order at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They are under no pressure to sell, given Bergvall put pen to paper on a new six-year contract in April last year, which runs until June 2031.

The central midfielder has made 78 appearances for Spurs since arriving in a €20m deal from Swedish side Djurgardens in 2024 and featured 33 times in all competitions last season, scoring once and registering five assists.

Newcastle can spend big

Newcastle have funds burning in their pocket after selling Sandro Tonali to Spurs for €107m earlier this month, in addition to Anthony Gordon's €80m switch to Barcelona. The Magpies have missed out on several targets such as Johan Manzambi, who snubbed them to join Aston Villa, and Victor Munoz after he signed for Liverpool. Eddie Howe did manage to get one of his top targets, however, signing Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim in a €50m deal.

Newcastle record arrivals

If they were to pull off a deal for Bergvall, it's likely that it would rank inside the top-five of their all-time record transfers. As the graphic above shows, Newcastle's bid only fell just short of the €57.5m paid to Brentford for Yoane Wissa. It's unlikely they would break their transfer record to sign the Swedish youngster, with that record belonging to Alexander Isak after he was brought in for €77.9m from Real Sociedad in 2022.

Interest from Nottingham Forest

That's because Newcastle are not the only team interested in Bergvall. He has has also attracted which offers from ambitious Nottingham Forest, who have already agreed to sign Xaver Schlager on a free transfer after his release from RB Leipzig. Oliver Glasner is keen to add the highly-rated Spurs youngster to his squad and sees him as the ideal replacement for Elliot Anderson, who joined Manchester City in a €116m deal.

The market for central midfielders has been inflated by Tonali and Anderson's transfers, which were some €30m and €40m above their market values. Having spent over €225m already on their summer signings, Spurs are looking to capitalise on that. It remains to be seen if Newcastle will improve their offer for Bergvall or move onto cheaper targets, but every club knows they have money to spend and it may be difficult to negotiate as a result.
