Record transfer fee – Tarik Muharemović set to join Leeds United from Sassuolo

Tarik Muharemović was one of Serie A’s dominant centre-backs at US Sassuolo in the 2025/26 season and a regular starter forBosnia and Herzegovina at this summer’s World Cup in North America. The defender is now set to move to the Premier League. According to a report by Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Muharemović is set to join Leeds United, where the 23-year-old will become the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Once a deal is complete, Muharemović is set to sign a contract with Leeds until 2031. Leeds are set to pay €40m for the centre-back. Only Georginio Rutter would rank ahead of Muharemović as Leeds’ most expensive signing. The striker joined from Hoffenheim in a deal worth a total of €40.5m, but the initial fee was increased by €12.5m following his transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2024, thanks to a sell-on clause held by the Bundesliga club.
In Muharemović’s case, too, another club stands to make a substantial profit from the transfer fee. Juventus had signed the Ljubljana-born defender on a free transfer from Wolfsberger AC in 2021 and sold him for €2m in the summer of 2025 following a year on loan with Sassuolo in Serie B. Juve would receive 50% of the transfer fee for Muharemović, which they urgently need for their own transfer plans.

“He had already shown a great deal of confidence and technical ability as a modern defender in Serie B,” said Transfermarkt’s Serie A expert Stefano Buonfino when rumours of a move to England first emerged regarding Muharemović in January. “He has confirmed that in Serie A, even against top clubs and outstanding strikers. He has made a few mistakes, but that’s understandable for a centre-back of his age playing for a newly promoted side. He has shown great consistency, and his place in the starting line-up has never been in doubt.”

Buonfino describes Muharemović as “physically very robust, particularly strong in aerial duels, where he can use his height and anticipation to his advantage. He is determined, reads the game well and anticipates moves. He also has good ball control and isn’t afraid to break out of defence to join in the attack when the opportunity arises.”
