After becoming the fourth fastest player to score 50 goals for his national team, Erling Haaland has set a new record by becoming the fastest player to score 60 goals for his nation. On Tuesday, Haaland scored the winner for Norway in their2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. It was also the fifth goal in just his third World Cup game, and he is now only one goal behind top goalscorer Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot.

Perhaps Haaland would already be first. But Norwegian head coach Ståle Solbakken rested Haaland in the final group stage match against France (1-4), depriving the world of a match-up against Kylian Mbappé. Against Ivory Coast, Haaland was back in action, but the 25-year-old was mostly isolated. Haaland had just 27 ball contacts and completed just nine passes. But ultimately, he did what he gets paid for, scoring goals, and his winner means Norway have now advanced to the round of 16, where they will play Brazil.

Brazil, in fact, will be hard-pressed to keep Haaland off the scoresheet. After all, some of the numbers behind Haaland’s goalscoring record are simply insane. Haaland averages 1.13 goals per game for Norway. Or in other words, he has scored every 72 minutes for his country. It is a remarkable achievement too when one considers that Norway haven’t always been one of the top nations since Haaland made his debut for his country as a 19-year-old against Malta (2-0) in September 2019.

A goal every 72 minutes – How far can Haaland carry Norway at this tournament?

A glimpse at his goalscoring record, however, also reveals that Haaland is yet to score against a top nation. The Man City striker might have scored three goals in two games against Italy in this qualification cycle. But part of that story is also that Italy haven’t qualified for three consecutive World Cups. Indeed, Norway’s standing prior to the emergence of this golden generation meant that they often faced lower-calibre opponents. Haaland, for example, scored five times against Moldova (11-1). The goal against Ivory Coast was, therefore, a great start, but in Brazil, the real test awaits just over the horizon.
