The English Premier League returns this weekend with Manchester City’s trip to Chelsea unquestionably the biggest clash. Pep Guardiola’s men are nine points behind Arsenal in the title race but could cut the gap to just six after the Gunners suffered a surprise defeat to Bournemouth. While Arsenal remain overwhelming favourites to win the title, Man City have proven over the years that they can never be ruled out.

Realistically, City need to win in the capital to preserve any faint hopes of being crowned champions, but there’s also plenty on the line for Chelsea. The Blues are in a battle with several clubs to secure Champions League qualification by finishing in the top five. Liam Rosenior is also under growing pressure from the disgruntled Chelsea support and a statement win would relieve some of the scrutiny. Both clubs have been crowned champions of Europe this decade with many landmark signings and we’ve formed the most expensive XI between them based on transfer fees.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Most valuable XI

Six Man City stars and five Chelsea players feature in the combined XI with the 11 transfer fees totalling €846 million. Enzo Fernández is the most expensive transfer across history from either side in history at €121m. Jack Grealish ranks second at €117m but misses out due to being on-loan currently at Everton. Chelsea captain Fernandez will miss the fixture due to an internal suspension but he forms the midfield trio, alongside teammate Moisés Caicedo and Rodri.

As the graphic below illustrates, João Pedro leads the line, flanked by Man City duo Omar Marmoush and Antoine Semenyo. Despite being the joint-most valuable player in the world on Transfermarkt, Erling Haaland only cost City €60m. Josko Gvardiol and Wesley Fofana are two of the most expensive defenders in history with James Trafford pipping Gianluigi Donnarumma in goals.
