Wolfsburg captain Maximilian Arnold got emotional after the only Bundesliga club he’s ever represented finally broke their long winless run. Arnold’s Autostädter finally won a Bundesliga fixture after going winless in 12 straight on Saturday afternoon. Arnold, who commemorated his 400th Bundesliga appearance, was overjoyed and extremely emotional.
The three points picked up against Union Berlin are of monumental significance. Wolfsburg picked up ground against St. Pauli after their relegation rivals drew Köln last night. Only two points separate Wolfsburg from potential survival via the Bundesliga promotion-relegation playoff place. With four matches remaining, Arnold can hope for another season of top flight football.
Maximilian Arnold’s commitment to Wolfsburg
The Dresden-native has worked as Wolfsburg’s skipper since July 2022 when he inherited the captain’s armband from Joshua Guilavogui. Arnold made his Wolfsburg in November 2011 at the age of 17. The now 31-year-old opted to extend his contract with die Wölfe this year despite the fact that the team has been struggling from the onset of the season.
Arnold’s unwavering commitment to his Lower Saxon outfit has led to him expressing dour emotions at other times this season. This time, Arnold fought back tears of relief and joy whilst speaking on what the victory meant to him. Groin problems have led to the veteran being unable to start for his side since February. Arnold once again worked as a very late sub of the bench for the sixth consecutive match.
Arnold’s emotional statement
“It’s hard for me to find the right words,” the captain managed to slightly stammer into the Sky Germany microphone. “The guys fought hard. Luck was finally on our side. We’ve been taking it straight on the chin in recent weeks, so I’m very proud of the team today.
“This was a brutally important match; by far one of the most important ones of my career,” Arnold continued. “It really is special. I’d be lying if I said I’ve enjoyed every single one [of my games] I just enjoy playing in the Bundesliga.”
As matters stand now, Arnold might maintain some hope of enjoying the privilege next year. Among active players currently serving in the top flight, only current Freiburg mega-performer Matthias Ginter (408) has made more top flight appearances.
