Wrexham squandered a golden opportunity to secure their place in the Premier League play-offs. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's club lost 3-1 to leaders Coventry and will now face a last day showdown in the Championship.
With one game to go, they are still in control of their own destiny. They are level on points with seventh-placed Hull City, but have one more goal in the goal difference, as in England there is no head-to-head goal difference, but ties are decided on the general goal difference.
However, the last matchday is more complicated for Wrexham than for Hull. They face Middlesbrough at home, who are fourth and still fighting for a better position, while Hull host mid-table Norwich, with nothing left to play for
Wrexham will have to do the same as Hull to ensure they finish ahead. But if Hull win by a big margin, it will force Wrexham to do the same, as they are only one goal ahead. Whatever happens, it will have been an exceptional season, as they were promoted last season.
Ryan Reynolds' promise is close to being fulfilled
If they manage to qualify for the playoffs and win promotion to the Premier League, they will have achieved their fourth consecutive promotion since Ryan Reynolds bought the club in 2021. The actor set a target of being in the top flight in 10 years and could achieve it sooner.
Tom Brady's Birmingham City have not been so lucky, as they have been left in the middle of the table with nothing to play for on the final day. They will try for promotion next season.
