Top-flight German football is being shown live on the BBC this season after rights were secured to broadcast Friday night Bundesliga matches through to 2027.

The coverage will continue on Tuesday, 13 January where Bayer Leverkusen looking to close the gap on leaders Bayern Munich as they travel to mid-table Hamburger SV.

All matches will be available to watch live on the BBC Sport website, app and on BBC iPlayer every Friday, with clips of the biggest in-game moments across BBC Sport's social media channels.

Hamburger SV have their heads just above water as it stands, with them sitting in 13th in the league and four points separating them and their local rivals St. Pauli in the relegation play-off place.

HSV have been strong at home this season, winning 14 of their 16 points at the Volksparkstadion. They have also been impressive against some of Germany's stronger sides, beating Stuttgart 2-1 and drawing to Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt. In fact, they have only lost two of their eight home matches all season and are four matches unbeaten at home.

Bayer Leverkusen are in a much better position. Sat in fourth, they have nine wins from their opening 16 matches and a win against Hamburg could see them move to just a point behind second. They are also the second highest goalscorers in the Bundesliga this season.

Despite their better position, Leverkusen are trying to find more consistency under new manager Kasper Hjulmand. After taking charge on matchday three following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, Leverkusen went on a seven-match unbeaten run. Since then, however, have struggled to get another consistent run together. They will be looking to start another run in Hamburg after being thrashed 4-1 by Stuttgart on Saturday.

The match-up between these two sides is pretty even historically, with Hamburg winning 30 of the 82 encounters and Leverkusen winning 32. Leverkusen are the stronger of the two sides in recent history, having won six of the last ten Bundesliga meetings between the two sides.
