Liverpool took a big step towards Champions League qualification with a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds’ performance wasn’t the most convincing, but Arne Slot’s side secured three points that saw them move eight points clear of sixth place Brighton.
With just four games remaining, that gap should be enough to see Liverpool playing Champions League football next season.
The victory was marred by an injury to Mohamed Salah, one that could mean he has played his final match for the Reds, but goals from Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak were positives.
The scorer of the other goal, Liverpool’s second, was Andy Robertson and his fine finished proved that Richard Hughes has made a monumental mistake.
Not offering Andrew Robertson a contract was a huge mistake
Robertson’s calm finish to put the Reds 2-0 up was a big moment for the vice-captain.
The 32-year-old recently made his pending departure from Anfield public and has since stated that he didn’t even receive an offer of an extension to keep him at the club.
Robertson has been an excellent servant to the club but is admittedly entering the twilight of his career.
Still, the decision not to even try and keep the Scotsman at the club seemed a bit odd, and the left-back's goal against Palace highlighted it as a huge mistake.
Not only will Liverpool have to try and replace Robertson on the pitch, they will have to replace his leadership and character in the squad too.
That won’t be an easy task, and the 32-year-old proved once again on Saturday that he is a player who can step up when needed.
