Turkish club president confirms interest in Manchester United star

Trabzonspor’s president Ertuğrul Doğan has confirmed they want to sign Manchester United star Andre Onana on a permanent transfer this summer.

The Cameroonian is currently playing for the Turkish outfit, having joined on a season-long loan last summer.

Onana joined United from Inter Milan in a £47.2 million deal in 2023.

But he proved to be an unreliable goalkeeper and made several high-profile mistakes.

Onana was under the impression that he would stay at United for the 2025-26 season.

But he missed the opening game of the campaign due to a hamstring issue and was demoted by former boss Ruben Amorim upon his return.

Onana left to join Trabzonspor on loan, with United signing Senne Lammens on deadline day.

The 30-year-old has been impressive with his performances in Turkey, starting 26 Super Lig games and keeping six clean sheets.

He received a lot of praise this week when he saved three penalties to lead his team to victory against Samsunspor in the Turkish Cup quarter-finals.

Trabzonspor president Doğan admitted after the game that he wanted Onana to stay at the club.

He told NTV Spor: “Onana’s career is already established. We like him. I’ve said this before. He has a certain plan for his career. If the conditions are right, we want him to stay. The final decision will be Onana’s.”

Onana has been earning rave reviews with his displays at Trabzonspor, but United have no plans to reintegrate him into the squad.

Lammens has brought a much-needed sense of calm to the defence, and the Red Devils want him to continue as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Altay Bayindir has served as a number two, but he is expected to leave the club this summer.

Bayindir wants more first-team opportunities and has agreed personal terms with Besiktas.
