Promotion challenge the goal next season – Evans

Manager Steve Evans says his objective is to turn Bristol Rovers into a promotion-challenging side next season, after signing a new contract with the club.

Evans' new deal, which runs until 2028, was announced on Saturday with a presentation on the pitch before their League Two win against Crawley at the Memorial Stadium.

The 63-year-old has transformed the Gas since his appointment in December, securing their position in the division and they go into Saturday's trip to Tranmere on a six-game winning run.

"That objective set by the board and our chair is very clear, to produce a promotion campaign next season, a challenge," Evans told BBC Radio Bristol.

"If we don't win promotion will I leave the football club? In the words of our chairman, no, but if we're not challenging that would be an issue for all of us because we have to somehow get this club into a position where it can't be in League Two for much longer."

Evans was brought in with Rovers on a 10-game losing run and in the relegation zone but they are up to 15th in the table and are the division's in-form team.

They have lost just once in their past 10 games – eight wins, one draw – and have taken 38 points out of a possible 69 during his tenure so far.

Evans described his time at the club so far as "really tough and stressful" but that it would only help them in the long run going into this summer's transfer window.

"Coming into a club that was on the run of form they were in, the performance levels from some good players were nowhere near where they needed to be and then having to find the players in those gaps in such a small timescale in the January window [was tough]," Evans said.

"One thing I know going through all that is we'll be in a much stronger position when we go through the summer window and the recruitment will be meticulous."

After Saturday's game with Tranmere, Rovers face Cheltenham at home and travel to Notts County in their final match of the campaign on 2 May.

Evans said work has already begun in earnest for the summer transfer window and pre-season schedule.

"We've always been a management team that is very clear in the players that we would like to bring to the football club," he said.

"We have three or four players identified for every position we want to add or strengthen."
