Play-off pressure piles up for St Mirren v Kilmarnock

"We always knew next week was going to be a massive game. It's a must-win game now."

St Mirren interim manager Craig McLeish did not attempt to play down the importance of Saturday's home match against Kilmarnock after defeat in Dundee meant his side dropped into the relegation play-off spot with just three games to go.

The 1-0 loss at Dens Park moved the hosts six points clear of 11th place and all but clear of danger, just as Kilmarnock's home win over Dundee United had boosted the Rugby Park side's hopes of staying safe.

It was a combination of results that has left St Mirren in serious trouble with time running out.

Confirmation of Livingston's long-expected relegation has only increased the focus on the fight to avoid the dreaded play-off and the game in Paisley is sure to be a tense affair.

After 35 games played, St Mirren sit on 30 points, with Kilmarnock one better off.

However, momentum has clearly shifted and Neil McCann's side will be the more positive heading into the potentially decisive clash.

Killie climb at important time

Kilmarnock's emphatic 3-0 win against United lifted the team out of the play-off spot for the first time since 14 December, when a 2-1 defeat in Aberdeen not only dropped the team to 11th place but also proved to be Stuart Kettlewell's last match as manager.

McCann did not arrive as his replacement until early January and, although he has not been able to find consistency, the former Dundee boss has been able to deliver wins on a more regular basis than his predecessor.

Of the seven wins Kilmarnock have managed in the league so far, five of them have come under the former Scotland winger.

Adding a sixth on Saturday would open up a four-point gap with two games to play and make the Ayrshire outfit odds-on to avoid the play-off.

However, success on the road has eluded McCann, with just two points earned from seven away games in 2026.

Will that travel sickness continue or could a struggling opponent offer up an opportunity for back-to-back wins at a crucial point?

St Mirren slump as injuries bite

On the same winter's day that Kilmarnock slipped into 11th place, St Mirren were given the weekend off from Premiership duty as they lifted the League Cup – their first major honour since 2013 – after a famous 3-1 victory over Celtic.

Since then, everything has gone downhill and a campaign that included such a memorable moment could yet end in misery.

The team's problems have not been hard to identify, with only 27 goals scored in 35 league games and the defensive solidity that helped earn top-six finishes in the three previous seasons disappearing.

While St Mirren did not want to lose Stephen Robinson to Aberdeen, the temporary appointment of McLeish had provided a new manager bounce of sorts.

A narrow loss to Rangers was followed by back-to-back wins over Falkirk and Aberdeen, but since then they have had a run of four defeats – and problems have piled up.

Injuries have deprived the team of key players like Keanu Baccus, Marcus Fraser and Jonah Ayunga, who scored a double in that Hampden final.

Goalkeeper Shamal George and back-up Ryan Mullen are both sidelined, with emergency short-term signing Ross Sinclair between the sticks for the past two games.

While Kilmarnock head to the SMiSA Stadium with a poor away record, St Mirren's last home match was a meek 2-0 defeat by a Livingston side who had hadn't won a game since August.

"We've got the advantage of being at home," McLeish said. "It just probably makes the picture even clearer in our head.

"But you're not wanting to rely on anyone else."

Nothing will be settled for certain after what looks likely to be a nerve-wracking afternoon.

However, the outcome will have a major say in who will end their season scrapping in a tense play-off battle.
