The Partenopei need a new coach after Antonio Conte decided to walk away two years into his three-term contract, having won the Scudetto in his first season, then the Supercoppa Italiana.
President Aurelio De Laurentiis seems to have narrowed the search down to just two names.
They are Allegri, who is now available after he was sacked by Milan, and current Bologna boss Italiano.
Napoli want Allegri or Italiano
Sky Sport Italia claim that after it seemed as if Italiano had become the favourite, problems emerged over getting him out of his contract at the Stadio Dall’Ara.
Napoli therefore resumed negotiations with Allegri today, waiting for Italiano to speak with the Bologna hierarchy on Thursday.
The news that the ex-Milan and Juventus coach was back in the running sparked a furious response from fans, who bombarded the club’s social media accounts with messages calling for Allegri to be rejected.
Some even started three different petitions demanding that he not be given the job at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The interest in Allegri goes back to last summer, when he had been approached by Napoli in case Conte decided to end his tenure after just one season.
Instead, Conte opted to remain, and Max accepted the Milan role.
