Time for Rio to Start If Mohamed Salah Is Out
There are moments in a season where circumstance forces clarity. This feels like one of them.
If Mohamed Salah’s injury does indeed rule him out for the remainder of the campaign, then Liverpool is not just losing their most reliable attacker—they are losing their identity in the final third. Goals, leadership, inevitability… all removed in one moment on the Anfield turf.
And when something that significant disappears, the response cannot be cautious. It has to be decisive. That is why Rio Ngumoha must now start every remaining game, not Jeremie Frimpong, someone who should be starting right back. Not as a rotation option. Not as an impact substitute. As a starter who can fly till the end of the season.

Liverpool’s season, already fragile, now sits in a strange space. The ceiling has dropped, expectations have shifted, and the need for controlled experimentation has arrived. There is little value in trying to replicate Salah through structure or system tweaks—because you cannot replicate what he brings.
So instead, you pivot and explore new and exciting ideas.
Ngumoha offers something entirely different. Directness. Fearlessness. A willingness to take responsibility in wide areas that this current side has often lacked when Salah is absent or marked out of games. Where others recycle possession, he attacks. Where others hesitate, he commits.
And crucially, he excites.
That matters more than it sounds.
This Liverpool team has looked flat, predictable, and at times devoid of belief. Injecting a young, aggressive, instinctive attacker into the starting eleven does more than change shape—it changes energy.

There will be voices urging caution. Start the experienced players. Lean into control. Protect the structure. But what structure? I don’t even think the under-fire head coach knows and a lack of training will not solve that.
This is not a team operating from a place of stability. It is a side that has struggled for cohesion, consistency, and identity throughout the season. Asking it to suddenly become controlled and measured without its most decisive attacker is unrealistic.
This is exactly the moment to be bold.
Ngumoha has already shown glimpses of what he can do. His performance against Fulham was not just promising—it was impactful. A goal, relentless running, and the ability to stretch the game when Liverpool needed an outlet.
Those are not small contributions. They are indicators. And indicators should be acted upon.
Starting him now does two things. It accelerates his development in meaningful minutes, and it allows Liverpool to gather real data ahead of a critical summer. Can he handle the physical demands? Can he influence games consistently? Can he be part of the forward line moving into next season?
You don’t get those answers from the bench.
At the same time, it removes the burden of expectation from others who have not stepped up. Rather than forcing square pegs into Salah’s role, Liverpool can reshape their attack around movement, pace, and unpredictability.
Florian Wirtz is drifting inside. Cody Gakpo or Alexander Isak linking play. Ngumoha is attacking space. It is not a like-for-like replacement. It is a necessary evolution.
And perhaps most importantly, it signals intent ahead of a charge back to form next term.
A club that is willing to trust youth in difficult moments. A team that is prepared to adapt rather than stagnate. A manager—whoever that may be in the coming weeks—who understands that progression often comes through risk.
Because standing still now achieves nothing. If Salah is out, the decision should be simple. Play Rio Ngumoha. Start him. Trust him.
And let whatever remains of this season be shaped by something new rather than clinging to what has already been lost.
