Having enjoyed an excellent personal campaign at the club, impressing Massimiliano Allegri with his professionalism and willingness to adapt to a more defensive role than he played throughout his illustrious career at Real Madrid, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner is open to continuing his Italian adventure.
Champions League football and Allegri’s future the key factors in Modric Milan decision
The first condition is Champions League qualification. Modric wants to play in Europe’s premier club competition next season and is yet to do so in a Milan shirt. Sunday’s final day clash against Cagliari therefore carries enormous significance not just for the club, but for the 40-year-old’s personal decision-making.
The second condition is the continuation of Allegri as head coach. The relationship between the two has developed into a strong mutual appreciation over the course of the season, and Modric’s desire to stay is intrinsically linked to working under the same manager.
The bond between them runs deep enough that Modric has been mentioned as a potential future member of Allegri’s coaching staff once he decides to hang up his boots.
Both conditions are therefore intertwined, if Allegri stays, it will likely be because Milan have secured Champions League football, which in turn would satisfy both of Modric’s requirements simultaneously.
