Manchester United are reportedly targeting Olympique Lyonnais’ Afonso Moreira (21) ahead of the summer transfer window, according to A Bola. Several top clubs in Serie A and the Bundesliga are also said to have expressed an interest in the Portuguese winger.
Having arrived in Lyon last summer from Sporting CP for a fee of €2 million, Moreira has established himself as one of the standout revelations of the Ligue 1 season. But also on the European stage. Initially seen as a player to be developed, the Lamego-born player was quickly thrust into the spotlight, forced to step in for Malick Fofana (21), who suffered a serious injury in early autumn.
Having established himself as an indispensable part of Paulo Fonseca’s squad over the course of the season, Moreira has become a key starter, starting 21 of the 35 matches he has played since the start of the season, and a decisive player, having now scored eight goals and provided 11 assists across all competitions.
Originally under contract with OL until 2029, the forward is expected to extend his contract by a further year very soon, in recognition of the quality and consistency of his performances. However, the involvement of major European clubs could well shake things up regarding his future, although he still appears committed to the Rouge et Bleu.
In any case, Sporting can take comfort in the fact that, at the time of his transfer – whether that takes place in the near future or further down the line – they secured a 20% sell-on clause for their former player. Currently valued at around €10 million, it would come as no surprise if a move were to materialise only for a significantly higher fee.
