Manchester United have received a boost in their attempts to sign Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson.
The England international is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe.
He has been impressive with his performances for Forest since joining in 2024.
But it looks they are resigned to losing their key star this summer, with United and Manchester City battling for his signature.
According to The Sun, Forest have identified Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney to replace Anderson.
Hackney has played a crucial role in Boro’s push for promotion this season. He has started 38 Championship matches, notching five goals and eight assists in the process.
His impressive performances have seen him handed the Championship Player of the Season Award.
Aside from Forest, Hackney also has other Premier League admirers in Everton and recently promoted Coventry City.
United have seen a huge revival in their fortunes since Michael Carrick took over as interim manager.
Sunday’s 1-0 win against Chelsea leaves the Red Devils on the brink of securing Champions League qualification.
They currently sit third in the Premier League table, with eight points ahead of sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.
Qualifying for the European competition would give them a boost in their pursuit for Anderson.
But they face stiff competition from Man City, who are said to be in pole position for the 23-year-old’s signature.
United are looking to reinforce their midfield, with Casemiro set to leave Old Trafford and Manuel Ugarte also facing an uncertain future.
