Premier League clubs have been rushing to get their proverbial wallets out this summer, having already splashed out over €1.35 billion on transfers across the league. The World Cup has proven to be an unwanted distraction for some teams as they try to piece together their pre-season schedule. Players taking extended leave may also not join until later in the summer, which explains why some clubs have opted to get their business done early.
That will allow new head coaches to get their ideas across as early as possible – and that's reflected in the big spending so far. Tottenham have made a significant investment in hauling themselves out of trouble after finishing 17th in back-to-back seasons. Under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, they have already signed Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Jan Paul van Hecke to the tune of €267m, with more likely to come. Savinho has long been on their radar, while the north London club dream of capturing Junior Kroupi from Bournemouth.

Behind them are Manchester City, who blew a huge chunk of their budget on Elliot Anderson for €135m – a record figure for a British player. The England international, 23, is currently the most expensive signing of the summer to kick off a new era under Enzo Maresca, after Pep Guardiola stepped down from his role at the end of last season. Brighton are preparing for their UEFA Conference League campaign by bringing in six new players to the tune of €126.4m, including breaking their transfer record to sign Luka Vuskovic from Spurs.
Chelsea and Liverpool have been regular big-spenders in the market and this summer is no exception, although most of their business was completed last season. Xabi Alonso has got a new wing-back in Marco Palestra and is set to sign Morgan Rogers for an eye-watering €137.6m, while Emmanuel Emegha, Geovany Quenda, Denner and Dastan Satpaev have been signed with the future in mind. Liverpool snatched Victor Munoz from Newcastle’s noses, while also completing a deal for Jeremy Jacquet in the January transfer window. The Reds’ failed pursuit of Yan Diomande suggests they are keen to make at least one marquee signing, so look out for that.

Premier League champions Arsenal are currently 12th in the spending stakes, but they could well find themselves topping the table in no time. Mikel Arteta looks set to miss out on Rogers from Aston Villa, but Julian Alvarez remains a target for the Gunners. Curiously, there are three teams yet to spend a penny of their transfer budget – Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, although the former and latter have each signed one player on a free transfer. Forest are the only team not to have a single confirmed deal, but new boss Oliver Glasner have funds to invest after Anderson's departure.
