Liverpool move step closer to perfect Arne Slot replacement

Most Liverpool fans have been calling for Arne Slot’s head over the last few weeks.

The Dutchman's performance as the Reds' boss has been lacklustre this season with there being no chance of the club adding any trophies to their cabinet this term.

Liverpool were recently knocked out of the Champions League by reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain and, even though they made a good name for themselves throughout most of the second leg, they still ended up losing 4-0 on aggregate.

This has caused fans to go against Slot even more and now, it finally feels like things are being put in place to replace the former Feyenoord coach.

A new report from The i Paper has outlined that Liverpool are now the ones leading the way to sign Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi this summer.

The Argentinians contract is set to expire in June and, since there's now not a chance that he's going to extend his stay with the Cherries, Liverpool have had their interest piqued.

Senesi may be 29 years old by the time he becomes a Liverpool player but, with the amount of Premier League experience he has under his belt, he’d be a more than welcome arrival.

It's clear that Liverpool need to add some new defenders to their ranks in the summer otherwise they could end up even worse off than they currently find themselves.

And, even though Liverpool leading the way for his transfer isn't a direct indicator that Slot's time at Anfield is coming to an end, it feels like it's the closest that the club have ever been to hiring his perfect replacement.

Marcos Senesi's arrival would make Xabi Alonso's system viable at Liverpool next season

At the moment, Liverpool's defence is one of their main areas that they lack depth.

Due to things such as injuries and a lack of form, Slot has been forced to keep the same centre-back pairing for most of the campaign with his full-backs often changing due to availability.

The fact that Dominik Szoboszlai has been used as a right-back this term says everything that fans need to know about the struggles that Liverpool have faced this term.

However, if Senesi were to join Liverpool, it would mean that, once everyone is fit and Jeremy Jacquet has joined, they'd have six centre-backs to choose from.

That is, as long as Ibrahima Konate chooses to stay, of course.

This would give the Anfield outfit more than enough defensive depth to make Xabi Alonso's 3-5-2 system viable.

Indeed, some additional players will be needed in other areas of the team but, with Senesi on top of Liverpool's shortlist, this certainly feels like the first step towards Liverpool getting Alonso in.
