A club legend can now replace Arne Slot at Liverpool.

Whether you like him or not the Dutchman’s time at Anfield will always be defined by his early success.

Winning the Premier League in his first season is no small feat. While he undoubtedly benefited from the foundations laid by Jurgen Klopp, Slot also made key adjustments that played a role in guiding Liverpool to the title.

However, that achievement does not excuse what has followed. This season, the responsibility lies squarely with him, and the evidence suggests he is out of his depth.

Since lifting the Premier League trophy, Liverpool have endured one of the poorest runs in the club’s history.

Results have declined sharply, and performances have lacked the consistency expected at this level. Slot has won fewer than half of his matches throughout 2025 and has continued on a similar trajectory into 2026. In their last 27 games, Liverpool have managed just 13 wins – a record well below the standards the club demands.

The drop-off is even more stark when looking at the club's league form. After winning their opening five matches of the season, Liverpool have secured only 12 victories in their next 30 Premier League games.

Even more concerning is their record in big fixtures, having lost both league encounters against Manchester City and Manchester United for the first time in 113 years.

Such statistics underline a worrying decline. The negative records continue to mount, and on current evidence, it's clear there is no going back from this for Slot.

Liverpool remain in a position to salvage their season largely due to the struggles of Manchester United and Chelsea.

In the long term, though, change is necessary, and that starts with appointing a manager who truly understands what it takes to operate at an elite level.

The club needs someone capable of working with top players, delivering both success and attractive football, while also implementing an aggressive, well-drilled pressing system.

Right now, Slot does not appear to offer that.

What Liverpool require is a return to identity: a manager in the mould of a gegenpressing specialist, someone who aligns with the expectations of the fanbase and can restore the high-intensity, “heavy metal” football that once defined Anfield.

However, before all of that Liverpool need to end the season on a high. That won't happen with Slot in charge. The Reds need a lift – something they can cling onto.
