Beukema Interest Signals Liverpool’s Defensive Concern
Liverpool’s centre back situation is becoming one of the defining issues of the summer. Virgil van Dijk remains a monumental figure in the club’s modern history, but his contract expires in 2027 and succession planning can no longer be delayed. Ibrahima Konate’s future appears more settled if, as reported, he signs a new contract, while Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet already point to long term thinking.
Yet Slot needs more than promise. He needs immediate competition. Liverpool’s defensive decline this season has been stark, particularly when compared with the control and conviction of 2024/25. A side that lifted the Premier League title has since looked vulnerable, and too many performances have carried a sense of avoidable damage.

“Manchester United have been linked with him…Chelsea too. Obviously, Liverpool are also admirers of Inacio, who is a left-sided centre-back. There aren’t many top ones available, but he is one of them, for sure.

“They’re going to have to replace Virgil van Dijk sooner rather than later, you would imagine, and Inacio could be an ideal replacement for him, as he can play on the left side of that central defence.
“He’s got good pedigree at international level and has played Champions League football as well.”
That assessment is fair. Inacio may look the cleaner long term Van Dijk profile, but Beukema may be the more accessible, immediate and cost effective move. Liverpool could yet require both types of thinking, one signing for current squad pressure, another for structural succession.

Beukema will not arrive with the global aura of a superstar. That should not diminish the importance of the link. Liverpool’s recruitment must now be less about statements and more about solutions.
AreaNapoli’s claim that a move is “absolutely possible” gives this story weight. The fee is sensible, the need is obvious and Slot’s reported approval makes tactical sense. Liverpool cannot allow another season to be shaped by defensive uncertainty.
