Zlatan Ibrahimovic was slammed by fans and given a police escort leaving San Siro, but it looks as if he’s the only survivor in Gerry Cardinale’s Milan cull, seeing a ‘Cesc Fabregas type’ coach.
The Rossoneri collapsed in a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari last night, missing out on a Champions League spot when only a draw would’ve been enough thanks to a superior head-to-head record with Como.
The tension was already sky high before kick-off, with fan protests outside the stadium and a Curva Sud fanzine statement calling for Ibrahimovic, CEO Giorgio Furlani, chief scout Geoffrey Moncada and President Paolo Scaroni to leave.
They had defended coach Max Allegri and director of sport Igli Tare, who both arrived only last summer.
Ibrahimovic given more Milan power
It was reported that Ibrahimovic and owner Cardinale were given a police escort as they left San Siro last night, with fears the anger of the fans would spill out.
Now multiple sources suggest that the RedBird chief will have a clean sweep of the entire Milan hierarchy, saving only his special advisor and former striker Ibrahimovic.
Allegri, Tare, Furlani and Moncada are all on their way out, with Ibra given the task of choosing their new coach.
The Corriere dello Sport reported today that Antonio Conte was approached to take over, but the same source suddenly changed tack following a call with Cardinale.
It is now claimed that they are looking for a ‘Cesc Fabregas type’ who can bring fresh ideas.
It’s no secret that Ibrahimovic and Allegri clashed, so with the Swede given more decisional power, they cannot continue together.
