It was billed as the biggest game the Premier League has seen for over a decade and few could deny it delivered. Arsenal had been top since October, while Manchester City had been top for a total of six days. Games of this magnitude do not come along too often.

But as eight-time champions, City are much more accustomed to being in this position and knowing how to win under pressure than Arsenal. With five matchdays to go, it looks as if Pep Guardiola could be celebrating title No. 7 come the end of May after his side edged a thrilling battle to emerge 2-1 winners at the Etihad Stadium.

It was master vs apprentice once again, with Guardiola facing his protégé Mikel Arteta in the opposite dugout. But the pair’s friendship would be put on hold for 90 minutes in Manchester as they fought hammer and tongs in a title six-pointer. If Arsenal won, they would surely go on to claim the title. Even a draw might be enough to see off the threat of City, having held a six-point gap going into the game.

But City, with nothing to lose, knew they could put pressure on the leaders with a victory. Guardiola even conceded a defeat meant it would curtains for his side knowing that for many members of the squad, this might be their final crack at securing more silverware. Nathan Ake, Bernardo Silva and Rodri are all expected to depart in the summer, having collected an array of trophies during their City careers. That fight and determination was evident, especially from the excellent Silva, who showed his leadership with a tireless display in the engine room.

City took the initiative early on and deserved their lead when Rayan Cherki weaved in between three defenders before slotting home with his right foot. Within 100 seconds, Arsenal drew level after Gianluigi Donnarumma was caught dwelling on the ball and Kai Havertz blocked his clearance, which ricocheted into the top of the net – stunning the Etihad into silence.

Erling Haaland goal drought

The hosts regained their momentum and continued to put Arsenal's defence under scrutiny, with Erling Haaland striking against the post with a chance he would normally expect to bury. At the other end, Donnarumma redeemed himself with an important stop to deny Havertz a second goal and suddenly, Arsenal sprung into life. Two minutes later, Eberechi Eze had been a passenger in the game until he turned and struck on the swivel, watching his effort crash against the woodwork and trickle along the line.

That moment proved to be crucial. Nico O'Riley's cross evaded Rodri but found Haaland waiting at the back post and he bundled the ball home despite Gabriel's best efforts to put him off. It was only his fourth league goal in 2026 after going four games without a goal. It was also his 23rd of the season, but none have been more important this one.

The pair later indulged in a fierce battle for tussling off the ball and the Brazilian was extremely fortunate to avoid a red card for appearing to aim a headbutt at Haaland. Both players were booked by referee Anthony Taylor. It was Gabriel who then hit the post from a trademark set piece, and Havertz still had time to head over in the dying seconds – a head-in-hands moment for Arsenal, Arteta and the thousands of fans in the away end.

But as they always seem to when they need to, City held on. The gap has been cut from nine points to three in the space of two weeks and crucially, City now have the title in their hands. If they beat Burnley on Wednesday, they will climb to the top of the table for the first time since October.

Premier League title race

There's still a long way to go, though, and City must feel like they need to remain perfect until the end of the season to truly stave off the threat of Arsenal. But for the third time in as many seasons, the title may be slipping away from Arteta and his players. How they react to this defeat will determine whether that becomes a grim reality or just a mere bump in their 2025/26 success.
